Scientific Engineering Centre “Biomass”

We are greening the future!

SEC "Biomass" experts Olha Haidai and Yevhen Oleynik participated in the program "Open World", funded by the US Congress (supported by the Open World Leadership Center) and enables young professionals to visit the United States for the purpose of short-term training. This year a delegation of nearly 50 people had the opportunity to learn the US experience in the field of energy independence, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

Within the delegation of five people, our colleagues stayed for a week in Wausau and Madison, Wisconsin. Professional program organized by University of Wisconsin Marathon County aimed to familiarize delegates with Wisconsin legislative initiatives in the field of renewable energy, administrative work to promote the achievement of energy independence of the state, the work of professional associations in promoting sustainable energy policies in Wisconsin through advocacy, education, and other joint initiatives.

During the training program, Olha and Yevhen met with representatives of:

  • Wisconsin Public Services - utility company that serves more than 445 thousand electric consumers and more than 323 thousand natural gas consumers. Share of RES in total electricity production of the company is 20%;
  • Wisconsin State Energy Office - the administrative body that assists businesses, local governments and citizens by promoting and investing in clean energy projects;
  • Association of Renewable Energy - ReNew Wisconsin - advocacy for state level public policies and regulations, which promote the use of renewable energy sources in Wisconsin;
  • Commission that regulates public utilities at the state level.

Delegates attended a lecture at UW-Stevens Point Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology and UW-Madison’s Energy Institute, Bioenergy Initiative on researches conducted in the production of second-generation biofuels and Bio-refinery technologies for complex processing of lignocellulosic biomass into high value added products (lignin, cellulose, which can be used for the production of biofuels and organic solvents).

Yevhen Oleynik made a brief presentation on the achievements of Ukraine in the field of energy independence at a weekly meeting of the Rotary Club Wausau. In addition, delegates had the opportunity to discuss legislative initiatives at both the federal level and at the state level: there were meetings with Wisconsin State Assemblyman Bob Kulp and with Pat Snyder, representative of US Congressman from Seventh District of Wisconsin.

Finally, delegation visited the 26th Annual Energy Fair, which is held by the Midwest Renewable Energy Association. The Energy Fair brings over 15,000 attendees to learn the latest and greatest in clean energy and sustainability. The fair is the longest running energy education event of its kind story.

We would like to thank the "Open World" Leadership Center , the American Councils for International Education and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to hold intense and very interesting week in Wisconsin. The knowledge gained by employees SEC "Biomass" will certainly be used when working with private companies, government agencies and organizations interested in achieving energy independence of Ukraine, primarily through sustainable bioenergy development.
